Information and documents you need before applying for the DV lottery

A checklist to prepare before you register for the US Diversity Visa lottery: passport details, photos, address, education, spouse and children details, so you do not stall halfway through.

Your passport

A valid passport is the most important document. You will need:

  • The passport number, issue date, expiry date and issuing country.
  • A passport that is not close to expiry, since you will need a valid one later when completing the process if you win.

Your personal details

Your first name, family name and middle name if any, written in English as in the passport, with your date of birth, city and country of birth and gender.

Plus your full mailing address, the country you currently live in, a phone number and an email address you can really reach.

Education or experience

The highest level of education you completed. If you do not have a high school education, prepare the details of your work experience over the last five years. No certificates are uploaded at registration, but you will be asked to prove them later if you are selected.

Spouse and children details

If you are married, gather your spouse's full details (name, date and place of birth, passport). For each unmarried child under 21, have their basic details and photo ready, even if they will not immigrate with you.

Photos

You need a photo that meets the rules for every person listed. Check them for free before you begin so you do not have to retake one at the end of the entry.

Questions and answers

Do I need to upload my diplomas when registering?

No. You only enter the education details; documents are requested later at the interview stage if you are selected.

Do I need my own email address?

Yes. Use an address you can actually reach, as you may need it to follow your entry.

What if my spouse has no passport?

Prepare the document required by the official instructions before registering, and check the exact rules there.
