Is DV Lottery registration open?
As of this page's last update, DV-2027 registration has not opened and the US State Department has not announced any DV-2028 dates. The official site says entries are not being accepted at this time.
In November 2025 the State Department postponed the DV-2027 entry period and said it would announce dates later. In October 2026 a US federal court ordered the government to go ahead with the delayed lottery, and the government appealed, so dates can change at any time.
Do not trust any website or post that gives a "confirmed" date before the State Department announces it.
When does the green card lottery usually open?
In past years registration opened once a year for about a month, usually from early October to early November, with results in May of the following year. That is a past pattern, not a promise, and future years may not follow it.
Entering on the first day gives you no advantage: selection is random and does not depend on when you enter. But do not wait for the last days either, because the official site gets crowded and slow.
The official DV Lottery registration link
The only official site for entering the DV Lottery and checking results is dvprogram.state.gov. The State Department publishes instructions and news on travel.state.gov.
- The government site always ends in .gov. Any other site using "lottery" or "green card" in its name is not a government site.
- There is no official DV Lottery app: you enter in a web browser.
- Never pay anyone who claims to be official: the US government does not sell winning chances and takes no money outside its own site.
What is new in registration?
The State Department introduced an entry fee of $1, paid on the official site, and most entrants must now enter the details of a valid passport and upload a scan of it when registering, with limited exceptions.
So get a valid passport ready before registration opens: issuing or renewing one can take longer than the registration period itself.
How to get ready before registration opens
Prepare everything now so you can enter calmly once registration opens:
- Check that your country of birth is on the current year's eligible list.
- Have a valid passport and a clear scan of its data page.
- Take a recent photo of every family member and check it for free.
- Collect the details of your spouse and all unmarried children under 21.
- Use an email address you really check, and save your confirmation number there after entering.
