How to check your US Diversity Visa lottery result with the confirmation number

How to find out the result of the DV lottery: where results are published, what the confirmation number is, when results come out, and what to do if you are selected.

Last updated:

Where and how are results published?

Results are published only on the official US State Department site, on the "Entrant Status Check" page of dvprogram.state.gov. You enter your details with your confirmation number and your entry status appears.

There is no other official way to learn the result, and nobody will contact you to tell you.

What is the confirmation number and why does it matter?

The confirmation number appears when you complete your registration and it is the only key to your result. Keep it safe with a copy of the confirmation page: without it you cannot see the status of your entry.

When are results published?

Results are normally published around May of the year after registration, and the status check stays open for several months. Check the exact date in the official instructions for each year.

What if I am selected?

Being selected does not mean you have the visa; it gives you the chance to complete your file and attend an interview. Follow the instructions shown on the official site on your result page and prepare your documents early.

Visa fees are paid directly to the official authorities and only at later stages.

Beware of messages claiming you won

The US State Department does not send emails announcing that you won. Any message or call asking for money to "confirm" a win is a scam. Read our article on lottery scams to protect yourself.

Questions and answers

Can I check the result without a confirmation number?

No. The confirmation number is required to open the result page, so keep it right after registering.

Does checking the result cost money?

No. Checking the result on the official site is free and nobody is entitled to charge you for it.

Will the US authorities contact me if I win?

No. You are not notified by email or phone; you check the result yourself on the official site.

Important notice, in plain words

Please read these facts before you start, so you can decide with full information.

  • This website is an independent private service. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representing the US Government or the US Department of State.

  • The official entry on dvprogram.state.gov costs a $1 US government fee (non-refundable). You can enter yourself directly on the official website and pay only that $1.
